4 signs your sofa might need replacing

4 signs your sofa might need replacing

If your sofa is showing any of the following signs, it might be (but not always) time to replace it:

1. It's uncomfortable to sit on or lean against.

Before you give up on your uncomfortable sofa make sure you get to the bottom of why it's uncomfortable. For example, if it's the cushions that are causing the discomfort you can quite easily and cost effectively get the cushions replaced without needing to replace the entire sofa.

Most sofa cushions can easily be taken apart so that you can access and replace just the cushion inserts which will save considerable time and money. Plus it will add a fair few years of life to your sofa, keeping it looking as good as new.

So if your sofa is uncomfortable then make sure you check out the cushions first because more often than not it will be the cushions that need replacing not the sofa itself.

On the other hand, if you suspect it's a lack of lumbar support that's the problem then it might be a case of needing to get the whole sofa replaced. It is possible to have the lumbar support fixed if you get the sofa reupholstered but, depending on the general condition of the furniture, sometimes it is more cost effective to replace the whole sofa in cases where the support needs to be upgraded in addition to other fixes.

2. Your sofa is making creaks, squeaks and pops.

If your sofa is beginning to make lots of strange noises you might want to get it checked out as this could be a sign that it's beginning to be unsafe.

Don't panic however, things like squeaks are fairly common in older furniture and can sometimes be an indication of a problem with the springs in the sofa. This is common and is usually just caused by wear and tear over the years. If the squeaking persists it's probably a good idea to have the sofa looked at by a professional who can assess the situation and let you know whether or not it has any other issues that need to be dealt with.

Alternatively the squeaks could be coming from loose screws in the frame. If this is the case, it can often be solved by simply tightening the screws on the wooden parts of the frame of the sofa.

If the squeaking problem is not caused by a broken spring and you are unable to tighten the screws then the creaking could also indicate that your furniture may have structural damage. This is especially common if the sofa is a number of years old so it might be a good idea to consider having it replaced.

3. It no longer fits your space well.

Perhaps you've changed some of the other furniture in the room, moved house or downsized your living spaces. Whatever the reason, if your sofa looks out of place in its new surroundings, it might be worth considering replacing it with a new one.
