How to Measure for your Made to Measure Curtains

Measuring for your curtains doesn’t have to be complicated. There are a couple of small decisions to make; like where you want your curtains to sit and whether you are hanging on a track or pole, but once you’ve decided just follow our simple guide below.

We recommend using a metal tape measure for the highest accuracy.

It’s worth mentioning that if you are replacing existing curtains and you want them the same size and to sit in the same place, you can simply measure the drop of your current curtains and the width of the pole or track.

In this Guide:

How to Measure for Eyelet, Pencil Pleat & Pinch Pleat Curtains

To get the correct measurement you need to ensure you are measuring the width of the curtain track or pole, not the window width. We'll use that measurement to calculate the required amount of fabric for your curtains. It's important that this measurement is as accurate as possible.

If you’re fitting a new track or pole generally you should have the pole or track extend 15cm-20cm either side of the window and sit at least 15cm above.

For a curtain pole provide the measurement of the width of between any finials or end caps.

For a standard curtain track measure and provide the full width of the track.

How to Measure the curtain drop

Usually curtains are hung either to the floor, below the sill or to the sill. We recommend that you measure your curtains to finish:

  • 1.5cm above the floor if you’re going for floor length
  • 15-20cm below the sill (or 2 - 3cm above the radiator)
  • Or if you’re going for sill length - 1.5 cm above the sill

When hanging to the floor or sill, it’s important to leave a small gap at the bottom so the curtains don’t drag and get mucky or damaged.

Measuring for Pencil & Pinch pleat pole headings

If you’re hanging your curtains using a curtain pole, measure from the underside of the curtain rings to where you want the curtain to finish at the bottom.

If you’re going to be using a curtain track, measure from the top of the track to where you want the  curtain to finish at the bottom.

How to Measure for Eyelet headings

Our eyelet heading curtains will fit poles up to 40mm in diameter. For this curtain style simply measure from the top of the pole to where you want the curtain to finish at the bottom.

We will make the curtain with an automatic excess of 3cm of fabric to account for the top of the eyelets along the pole so please just provide the drop measurement.

How to measure for Wave Curtains

Measuring for your Wave curtains is similar to measuring for a blind.

Exact Fitting

This is the recommended style and is where the wave curtains will fit outside the window recess, overlapping on all sides. Simply measure the size of the recess, then add a little extra on all sides to ensure adequate coverage.

We recommend that you overlap the window recess by at least 150mm at the top and 150mm each side. This will limit light leakage. The overlap at the bottom is personal choice but please take into account the placement of other things around the recess such as radiators.
